Windsor
Castle is one of the main royal residences and is the largest inhabited
castle in the world. It is also home to a variety of royal ghosts.
Henry
VIII has been seen wandering the corridors of the castle and his footsteps
and agonized groans have been heard by many visitors.
Anne
Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife, has been spotted at the window in Dean's
Cloister, as has Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth has also been seen in the
Royal Library, and her footsteps have been heard walking from room to room.
In all accounts she has been wearing a black lace shawl and gown.
Charles
I has appeared on several occasions with his head intact, despite the fact
that he was beheaded during the English Revolution. He has been seen in the
library as well as the Canon's house, looking remarkably like the portraits
painted of him.
King
George III has been seen at one of the windows below the royal Library,
where he was confined during his mental deterioration.
As
well as royal ghosts, Sir George Villiers, the first Duke of Buckingham, is
said to appear in one of the bedrooms and the ghost of Herne the Hunter has
been seen many times in the Castle gardens.
Many
ghostly spirits haunt the Long Walk, including the ghost of a soldier who
committed suicide after declaring that he had seen the marble statues in the
park move about of their own accord.
Several
other ghosts have been seen around the towers of the castle and in the
gardens and cloisters.
