Sherborne Castle has been the home of
many famous people in the past, including Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir John
Digby. Centuries ago, a curse was put on the castle by one of William the
Conqueror's knights. He claimed that if anyone took the castle away from the
church they would suffer great misfortune. So far, the Digby family have
survived the curse.
Sir Walter Raleigh was executed at the Tower of London,
but his ghost is now thought to haunt Sherborne. On Saint Michael's Eve he
is said to appear in the gardens, sitting under a tree that bears his name.
