In 1232, Lacock Abbey was founded by the
Countess of Salisbury, and consecrated as an Augustinian Convent. It is
reputedly haunted by a beautiful young woman.
Nobody is certain who the ghost is or why she chooses to
haunt the Abbey. Perhaps the most obvious suggestion would be the Countess
herself, coming back to the place she loved. Whoever the young lady is, she
has been seen by many witnesses, both inside and outside the building.
